Tips for Re-entering the Workforce

Written by Contributing Writer / on 11/30/2010 / 0 Comments

Going back to work after a long weekend can be tough. Re-entering the workforce in today's meager job market can be downright scary. It can be intimidating to compete with other job seekers who may not have spent time away caring for a sick relative, traveling, or starting a family.

Don't let a hiatus in work history dominate your career application; you can deemphasize your absence:

  • Beef up your resume. Try volunteering, taking an online course, or look for internships -- do something now to help fill the time out of the market.
  • Arrange your work history functionally rather than chronologically. That will highlight your strengths and abilities while downplaying the employment gap.
  • Seek advice. In addition to telling people you know that you are currently looking for work, ask them to take a look at your resume and offer guidance. Or have a friend run through a mock interview with you to help you prepare.
  • In an interview, be honest about why you are/were not working and briefly discuss your reasoning. However, be sure to focus on being enthusiastic about the job at hand and convey your readiness to rejoin the workforce.

Bottom line: Stress the positives, be open to new experiences, and demonstrate confidence.
